Elizabeth Lugg

Elizabeth is a family practitioner with nearly 30 years experience in family work. Elizabeth accepts instructions in the full range of public law work, including Care and DOLS cases. She has developed a keen interest in FII cases, non-accidental injury, including head injury, especially in cases where there is an allegation of a shaken baby. Other cases have involved sexual abuse, non-accidental injury, serious neglect and emotionally harmful behaviours.

Elizabeth has been consistently ranked in the LAA as a Leading Junior, most recently in the 2024 publication.

Whilst having a natural affinity to representing family members, Elizabeth is regularly instructed to represent local authorities,  interveners and Guardians.

Elizabeth also accepts instruction in complex private law cases mainly involving removal from the jurisdiction (appearing F (Children) [2010] EWCA Civ 1428) and  allegations of  ‘parental alienation’.

 

Elizabeth has a reputation as a tenacious barrister who does not demur from a fight. She does however enjoy sharing humour with clients although her court approach is highly focussed and thorough. She is approachable and empathetic and always well prepared. She is highly respected by colleagues and the judiciary.

As both a mum and a step-mum, Elizabeth brings her cases a first- hand knowledge of the challenges of parenting birth and non-birth children. She is pragmatic and will always seek out practical solutions to the vast range of family problems that are presented within her family law work . Elizabeth has appeared in the following noteworthy reported cases: Council of North Tyneside v S & Ors [20007] EWHC 393(Fam),  X (Factitious Disorder) [2021] EWFC 46.

Elizabeth is a qualified arbitrator for children work.
