Pupillage applications – choosing a set with a difference

November 28, 2022

Chambers runs its own scheme. Pupillage applications are available here from today. The submission window will open from 10:00am 4 January 2023 and will close at 10:00am 8 February 2023.

Why choose Dere Street?

Regular, positive recruitment is the key to our success. We recognise that uncertainty and insecurity is perhaps the greatest deterrent to those considering a career at the Bar. For that reason all pupils at Dere Street Barristers are recruited with a view to them becoming tenants. Pupils demonstrating the necessary determination, commitment and ability will be offered tenancies.

We are a modern, innovative and forward thinking multi-disciplinary set of approximately 100 barristers including Silks and Junior Counsel. Our Head of Chambers is John Elvidge KC.

We offer specialist advocacy, advisory and drafting expertise across a wide spectrum of practice areas and at every level of seniority.  Our aim is to provide the highest standards of service and to anticipate and respond to our clients’ needs. With state of the art clerked premises in Newcastle, Middlesbrough and York we are committed to delivering a high level of expertise to meet the needs of professional clients across the North Eastern Circuit and nationally.

What our present pupils have to say

“Pupillage with Dere Street has been brilliant so far. I could not have asked for a more supportive supervisor and I feel like all members of chambers are more than willing to help me when I need it. The friendly atmosphere at Dere Street, combined with the wide range of interesting cases I have been able to view and I am now being instructed on, leave me in no doubt that I made the right choice with Dere Street.”
“I have thoroughly enjoyed pupillage so far with Dere Street Barristers, every member of chambers has been so welcoming and always happy to help and I have felt that no question is too small or too silly. It feels like I have known everyone in chambers for such a long time.
The structure of pupillage has allowed me to gain new skills and adapt my current skills. I have been able to experience all different aspects of law. The clerks and my supervisor are always willing to help me learn new areas of law and if I want the experience something in particular, they are always happy to assist.”
