Operation Shelter

October 10, 2017

John Elvidge QC, Daniel Cordey and Nick Lane of New Park Court Chambers acted for the prosecution in a series of sexual exploitation trials generated by a Northumbria police investigation known as Operation Shelter.

In all seventeen men and one woman were convicted of offences committed against vulnerable young women in the Newcastle area including rape, trafficking and conspiracy to incite prostitution.

These cases have attracted enormous coverage in the national and local media on account of the scale and duration of offending, the use made of an informant known as XY and political controversy over whether the offending was racially motivated.
