James Robinson successfully represented a senior forensic social worker on behalf of Gateshead Council at an Inquest in South Shields before His Majesty’s Senior Coroner Terence Carney and a Jury arising from the death of a man detained under s37/41 Mental Health Act 1986 who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

The deceased had manufactured a ligature using unusual means after he had heard at a review hearing, the day before he died,  within the secure hospital where he lived that he might be detained for 10 more years if he didn’t engage with the treatment plan.

The jury recorded a verdict of misadventure after an inquest lasting 7 days where the family, the hospital and the Council were represented by barristers who were able to put questions to the many expert and professional witnesses as part of a full enquiry into the circumstances by which the Deceased met his death.
