Dere Street Barristers is proud to be a funding and delivery partner for the Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Law programme at Newcastle University.

Social mobility in Britain is low. The educational opportunities and life chances of a child born today are strongly linked to their parents’ socio-economic background. The Sutton Trust works to address this through programmes, research and policy influence to fight for social mobility from birth to the workplace so that every young person – no matter who their parents are, what school they go to, or where they live – has the chance to succeed in life.
The Pathways to Law programme supports young people from less advantaged backgrounds to access leading universities and the opportunity to explore what entering the legal profession might look like. In partnership with universities and employers, it runs engaging programmes to give students practical advice and leave them feeling inspired and more confident about their future. The programmes are completely free to attend. All costs – including travel, accommodation, food and activities – are paid for by the Trust and their partners.
For the first time, in September 2019 the Sutton Trust is offering the Pathways to Law programme in the North East via Newcastle University.
As part of its ongoing commitment to addressing social mobility, Dere Street Barristers is proud to provide funding assistance to the Sutton Trust. In addition, members of Dere Street Barristers will provide information sessions to students, and Chambers will offer a number of mini-pupillages to allow students to not only experience life as a barrister but also to sit with a Judge and see hearings from the Bench.”
