Court sentence Defendants for their participation in a rooftop protest at a Newcastle Factory
December 6, 2023
Katie Spence represented Craig Smith at the sentence hearing at Newcastle Crown Court on 6th December. She successfully secured a suspended sentence on behalf of her client in respect of his role in a protest that led to a Newcastle factory having to be closed for two days and damages and loss in excess of £200k.
Judge Mallet told the court that it was a “carefully planned operation”. She said accommodation had been booked and a cameraman had been arranged and flags and banners had been made.
She concluded that the aim of the protest was to cause financial harm to the Israeli government, which owns the factory, by damaging the property and forcing it to close.
Ishaq Aslam was sentenced to 14 months in prison. Craig Smith and Jay Foster were both sentenced to 11 months in prison suspended for two years.
